Piracy in the Horn of Africa Region

The diploma thesis is a case study, which focuses on the identification of the key aspects influencing the presence of maritime piracy in the Horn of Africa region and the birth of Somali piracy. In accordance with the research questions, the thesis analyses the main factors that are influencing the birth of maritime piracy and the piracy itself the most. In the historical context, the thesis focuses on the causes for the piracy in the Horn of Africa region, as well as on the similarities between the historical and modern maritime piracy. The thesis also contains a detailed description of all measures taken against the Somali pirates. Based on the evaluation of the engagement of different international actors in the fight against the Somali pirates, the thesis analyses their role in association with the suppression of maritime piracy in the Horn of Africa region, including the legal enforceability, both in the historical context, and the international law, more precisely the national law, possibly international agreements. The analysis conducted in the boundaries of a case study has undoubtedly proven the advantage of an international cooperation while dealing with global issues, even if there are, seemingly insuperable, structural limitations. Impact of Maritime Piracy on International Trade

This thesis attempts to contribute to the discussion over the problem of maritime piracy that poses a threat to maritime transport as well as international trade. The impact of maritime piracy was researched mainly in the context of Somali pirates. Currently the problem concerns other areas, which are the subject of my investigation. The thesis is focused on maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea and Southeast Asia, which are the current piracy hotspots. The main goal is to identify the implications of maritime piracy and analyze its impact on international trade in the given regions.
International response to the phenomenon of piracy in Somalia

This thesis examines the international response to growing number of pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia. Its aims are to specify and analyse military forces and civilian organizations that have been deployed to combat piracy in the region. The first part of the thesis outlines the causes of the conflict and analyses the impact of Somali piracy on the private and public sectors. The second chapter is devoted to the activities of international organizations working in the area. Final part discusses particular counter-piracy military missions.
The (Non)necessity of the International Piracy Court

This thesis focuses on the issue of maritime pirate attacks prosecution. The proposal of the establishment of an International Piracy Court is connected to the growth of pirate attacks in the area of the Gulf of Aden off the borders of Somalia between 2007 and 2011. The Somali government was not able to suppress this threat to the international security and pirates often avoided trial. Other countries were not willing to prosecute pirates at their national courts. By that time the thought of the establishment of the new specialized international tribunal arised. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate if there actually is the necessity to create an International Piracy Court in the current local and global situation.
The Impacts of Maritime Piracy on International Trade

The diploma thesis analyzes the impacts of maritime piracy on international community. The study analyzes the situation in terms of economic impacts, but also in terms of international cooperation in solving piracy issues. The aim of the diploma thesis is to define most vulnerable locations, quantify economic impacts and evaluate the impacts of military missions in the affected regions, as well as analyze the published recommendations.

Solving the Problem of Somali Maritime Piracy

The thesis deals with the contemporary problem of Somali maritime hijackings from the European Union perspective. First, it presents the problem per se while focusing on the framework in which the piracy issue is being solved. Second, it analyses the role of the post-Lisbon European Union in international crisis management. Taking EU's first naval military mission EU NAVFOR Somalia "Atalanta" as a case study, the paper essentially aims at shedding some light on the current state of the European Union's recognition as a major actor in international politics. Based on the Somali piracy case study, the text contributes to the theoretical debate about EU actorness.
Piracy as a Notable Threat for Maritime Business

My thesis was written with the aim of the author to describe the actual situation and simultaneously to find out, what for means to utilize in the war with the maritime pirates and seaborne terrorism. Another part contains also some advices, what should the captains of the ships and the shipping companies conform as a preventive proceedings. This paper is targeted on the area of the Strait of Aden, the Horn of Africa and the coast of Somalia. The Malacca Strait is a secondary area, which is mentioned here to complete the information about maritime piracy.
